Driving to Maryland from Northwest D.C. along Route One if you choose a leisurely avenue other than the frenetic Baltimore Washington Parkway, you see them. The highly educated and polished Black federal bureaucrats and corporate honchos in and around Georgetown and environs live in narrow hallowed brownstones and single detached colonial townhouses with low wooden or iron grill fences. Both sides of the winding thoroughfare leading to Chevy Chase are encrusted with petite gardens occupying the fringes of a one car garage. All the parked autos are shiny new beaming in stark contrast to the weather beaten facades of the classic edifices housing them which hint of half century old economic strides and tradition.

My Black boss was one of them, graduating from George Washington University, so dynamic an over achiever, he set up a small sized three story office in Georgetown, a short trot from DuPont Circle. Power dressing or call it investment wardrobe were concepts that crept for the first time in my thoughts because he personified them in painstaking detail. Smelling of expensive aftershave, he sauntered in with suits made for the movies matched with shoes that suggested value, perfection, control, and upward track. His clothes spoke to you before he even opened his mouth. That's how you knew he was a man of consequence. A man worth his salt as he sat behind a deep mahogany desk that stood out with history amongst new inventions and shapes that herald innovations in office gadgetry.

My cousin invited me to stay awhile with my whole family in tow as a rest stop while driving cross country through the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee via Interstate 45 to migrate to New York City from Houston. There was a big billboard at the city limits which smirked with Texas sarcasm that anyone with a red heart yearning for the Big Apple should best keep on going on I-45 all the way north. Laurel town in Maryland was near the University of Maryland campus and nothing else could be noted of it except a huge mall that seemed overbuilt for such a cozy tight settlement. My cousin's house was up an incline in a narrow dead end street. Of all things uneventful about the place, the placid ambiance in front shook with a gut wrenching morbidity to reveal a cemetery over the backyard fence.

Old Town and Germantown sprang with heartwarming scenery of endless gentle green ventilated by friendly cuddly breezes. The insides of Maryland bore empty winding roads like the famous song of Paul McCartney. Traveling to a doctor's office to find relief for my only daughter, Lesley, who was stung by a bumblebee meant traversing sing song slopes basking in wide open spaces to finally get there which was a white wooden affair with a wrap around verandah that begged for Clark Gable to walk in decked in immaculate tweeds. Trite to say the place tugged at you with so much ensnaring affectation that you would be bound to mistake the hospitality to be an invite to stay permanently. My cousin said give it a try before setting off finally for the daunting challenges of Manhattan. I did which led me to an experience beyond telling, that of working for an all black enterprise with social redemptive value.

Three hour drives through the dual span Delaware bridge to be with Mona and the kids during weekends in Staten Island took its toll and just plain wore out the novelty of lunch breaks munching cold sandwiches at the DuPont Circle. Driving up the Arlington bridge was an invigorating high as the Potomac flowed regally with intimations of might and power as the Rubicon surged for the Roman legions. God the Father in heaven, Almighty and wise, full of love and compassion, took over the glory that radiated from Abe Lincoln's throne as solid proof that over sacrifice the flames of brotherhood are lighted to be the strength and vitality of an America blessed by God. My family went on ahead to get a toehold in the city that never sleeps while I dallied to try to make heads of my nascent involvement with Barry's pioneering venture to start up the ghettos and the trailer parks with credit card history and entitlement.

Bending to the practical, I followed my destiny to learn at the foot of the Jewish moguls within walking radius of Central Park.
